Brain functions of a human body is complex and sophisticated. Brain is responsible for controlling and coordinating the body functions. It enabling us to think, feel, and experience the world around us. There are several key functions of the brain that are essential for our survival and well-being.

One of the most important function of the brain is the control of movement and coordination. Brain sends signal to the muscles to contract and relax, allowing the body to move in a controlled manner. Cerebellum, located at the back of the head, plays an important role in this process, to coordinate and finetune movements.

Regulation of the body’s internal environment also known as homeostasis is one of the functions of the brain. The hypothalamus a small region of the brain located just above the brain stem. Hypothalamus acts as a control center for the body’s internal environment, regulating body temperature, hunger, thirst, and other vital functions. Hypothalamus plays a role in the regulation of the body’s hormonal system releasing hormones to regulate body’s metabolism and growth.

The brain plays a critical role in our ability to perceive and interpret the world around us. Sensory receptors in the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin send information to the brain. This information interprets and creates a perception of the world. The primary visual cortex located in the back of the brain is responsible for processing visual information. While the primary auditory cortex located in the temporal lobes is responsible for processing auditory information.

Cognition is the ability to think, reason, and remember is another important function of the brain. The cerebral cortex the outer layer of the brain is responsible for cognitive functions such as language, problem-solving, and decision-making. Hippocampus a small region located in the temporal lobes plays a crucial role in the formation and retrieval of memories.

Emotion is also an important function of the brain. Limbic system a group of interconnected structures located deep in the brain plays a major role in processing of emotion. Amygdala a small almond-shaped structure located in the temporal lobes is particularly important in the processing of fear and emotions.

Finally the brain plays a crucial role in the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. The hypothalamus plays a central role in the regulation of sleep. Hypothalamus controls the release of hormones that promote sleep and wakefulness. The suprachiasmatic nucleus a small region of the hypothalamus plays a key role in regulating our circadian rhythm. The internal 24-hour “clock” that helps to regulate our sleep-wake cycle.
